Are you going through a breakup? Perhaps you’re thinking of breaking up with someone or maybe you’re thinking of that guy you had a crush on in primary school that went ahead to ask your seatmate for extra pencil. Did your regular puffpuff woman not open when you needed her the most? Whatever it is, my playlist promises to get you through the tough phase. You’re very welcome.

As we all know, there are five (5) stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. My selected songs promise to guide you as you go through the 5 stages and just in case you decide to have sense and move on, you can check back for my “feel good” playlist

1. Jar of Hearts – Christina Perri:

I’m still of the opinion that this is the ultimate breakup song. I’m not even kidding. The lyrics, the chords, the voice, the video, everything about this song is sad. Even if you’re not going through a breakup and you listen to this, you’ll remember your first heartbreak and shed real tears. Why does it feel like I’m exaggerating? Listen for yourself.

2. The Heart Wants What It Wants – Selena Gomez

This one is for when you guys just broke up or you’ve broken up for 5 years but it’s still fresh in your mind. It’s emotional, it’s heartwrenching, it was obviously written from a place of pain. Selena was actually crying in the video, and you will cry too.

3. Un-break My Heart – Toni Braxton

If you’re one of those people that hold on to unrequited love, this one is for you. And if you’re super dramatic like me, you can always listen to this song when you call your boo and he doesn’t pick up (even though you know he’s sleeping). Toni Braxton is king, y’all know that already, her husky voice makes this song so soothing every time.

4. Better in Time – Leona Lewis

I love this song. Close your eyes, don’t read this part. When I was going through the worst heartbreak ever, this song was on repeat, I could relate to the lyrics so much. It gives an assurance that things will get better and time heals everything.

5. Don’t Speak – No Doubt

When it’s still hurting, you should listen to this.

6. Six Degrees of Separation – The Script

This is a breakup playlist staple. Let’s say your relationship ends on Monday, you should put this song on repeat till Wednesday afternoon. Not for any reason asides it being a great song.

7. Where do broken hearts go – Whitney Houston

No words.

8. Fool Again – Westlife

The first time I listened to this song over and over was when I was in 100L. I liked this guy, and till this day, I’m not even sure if he liked me back. Anyway, we had a fight and then he now started talking to my roommate as in calling her and all. Lmao, Queen J had to listen to Fool Again to get over the pain. I think I was really silly as a teenager though.

9. Angels Cry – Mariah Carey ft. Ne-yo

You know those people that have been dating for 5/6 years but have broken up a little less than 100 times? This one is for them. Today they breakup, tomorrow they’re buying ice-cream together. #BreakupToMakeupClan

10. Mad – Ne-yo

Same as above. This is also recommended when you see your MCM liking someone else’s picture on IG.

11. Melt My Heart to Stone – Adele

What’s a breakup playlist without an Adele’s song? Child’s play. This is one of my favourite songs from Adele. When you’re done with his bs and you’re ready to move on, let this be your best song.

12. It Must Have Been Love – Roxette

Same as above. At this stage, you don’t have any fucks to give anymore. You’re just so done. Like boyy byeeee!

13. Already Gone – Kelly Clarkson

Sometimes, you get into a relationship with someone and then you know it’s gonna lead nowhere, you two know you guys have to break up, but no one wants to do it. Or you’re in a perfect relationship and your partner is so into you, but you know you two don’t fit, you know you two would be better off being with other people, so you have to be the bad guy and break things off. If you ever find yourself in any of those scenarios, Already Gone should be your anthem, I even recommend you sending the song and lyrics to your partner and this emoji – ?, they’ll get the message. This hurts so much.

14. The Reason – Hoobastank

When your foolishness causes your breakup and you’re back to your senses, listen to this song and move on. MOOOVVEEEE OONNNNNN!!!! Don’t use your reggae to spoil another person’s blues.

15. My Regret – Banky W

This is my favourite Banky W’s song. It’s so heartbreaking, so touching. As the title says already, it’s for when you wish you didn’t mess up so much, when you wish you treated le boo better. If this song touches you, you can reach out to your ex and try making up. Did I just write that? Damn these hormones. Even if you’re not going through any heart wahala, you should listen to this. Banky W is good abeg, I can’t shout.

16. Hero – Enrique Iglesias

Don’t bite my head off, I know Hero is not a breakup song. I included it so you can be reminded that one day you’ll be loved by someone who worships you. Oh Mims, you’re so sweet, thanks I know.

There are others, moreeeee actually but don’t let me bore you. One last one, this one is a “feel good” breakup song –Don’t you want me by The Human League. It’s one of my favourite songs eveerrrr!

I’m going to do something craaazzzyyyyy this weekend, maybe one day, I’ll tell you guys about it. Have a lovely weekend.
